The Ebay for Art Producers = Handmade Goodness for you! August 4, 2008
I don’t know about you, but I like to support the Mom and Pop shops. You will usually find me choosing the local fresh or farmers market over Safeway and Shaw’s if I can help it. I know that sometimes these types of markets can be more expensive, but all in all you can get products from local producers with more organic ideals, and that is appealing – not to mention fresher, more unique items directly from the producers.
Etsy is a place to buy handmade goods like jewelry and t-shirts directly from producers that make these unique goods. It’s a great portal for those of us who like things that are truly one of a kind (as every product on the site claims to be). I love this site, it’s like the local, organic site for today’s web, as the product search techniques that the site uses are very cool as well (check the color search too, pretty cool interface).
The best part of the site is the products themselves, which is why Etsy should be successful. Most of us use Ebay to search for deals for certain items that we are after. I sometimes find myself on Ebay looking for good deals on things like skis, computer parts and other things that are much more practical. Etsy is where I go for things like wall hangings, dog collars and really any present that might otherwise be difficult to find for friends and family. Another interesting tidbit I ran across, as this BuesinessWeek article states, most products (95%) on the site are produced by women.
Something I noticed about the site is the sheer amount of products that are offered, which I found very high. A simple search for “Necklaces” gave me around 11,500 hits, which could lead to problems as many of the items will never get viewed. As long as they stay creative with their product searching techniques they should be ok, though I imagine they are struggling to get enough demandfor some of these products to meet the supply from these producers (how fast could 11,500 necklaces sell? Time will tell if this idea is a killer, but I really like the idea and I will support it…give ‘em a look sometime.
