OnDemand TV: Great idea, bad implementation August 27, 2008

I think most of us who watch TV have had the experience: flip over to the OnDemand channel and get a listing of categories that is almost impossible to guess where the show you want to watch is grouped in.  You eventually find the channel that your show is on, but alas, your show isn’t listed.  Frustrating.

Another issue with traditional cable products is that out of the 80 something channels that I get from my Comcast subscription, I probably watch about 5 (minus the networks).

So here’s my solution: Provide a truly OnDemand television solution.  I get to choose which channels I get and pay a flat rate per channel, something like $5 per channel – and the traditional networks and CSPAN come free.  Wow, how refreshing – I choose CNN, ESPN, MSNBC, Food Network, G4 and Comedy Central.  Unfortunately, I think there’s a large demographic of us 25 somethings out there who would choose the same sort of lineup (Bravo included perhaps), so some of the outlying networks would likely get marginalized.

But…now here’s the kicker: If there’s a show or game on a channel that I don’t currently subscribe to, I should be able to simply hit that channel 1 button and turn it on!  Go ahead and charge me for it, and what will probably happen more often than not is that people who turn on certain channels will forget to turn them off, and i to pay for them.

In my perfect world, this would be my cable subscription.
