Google in Talks to Acquire Twitter? April 2, 2009

WOAH! From Techcrunch this evening comes a crazy rumor:

Obviously this is huge – We’ll see what comes of it.  As we all know, these rumors come and go quite often, but this one just sort of feels like it’s going to happen after Google CEO Eric Schmidt hinted at the possibility of “an acquisition” on Charlie Rose last month:

UPDATE: Again from TechCrunch: The talks between the companies are confirmed, though they appear to be in the early stages. There is also reports that the companies might work together to create a ‘real-time’ Google search leveraging Twitter. Where’s Microsoft in all of this?

It’s about time. I have said in my previous comments here and elsewhere that it’s just a matter of time before Google attempts to buy Twitter. But yes, you are right – it’s a bit late in the game for them, especially with the value of Twitter going through the roof. I am sure they will pay much more this time. Who knows – this could be a sale that will be more than YouTube.com. Who knows? Depends on whether the Twitter boys are desperate for money or not.

Love the introductory portion re. founders being in grad school and needing help. Needed an adult was what he meant. :-)

Agreed, Google will buy Twitter. It’s inevitable and only makes sense. Precedent for it already.

Real question, who’s going to buy Facebook? That’s more of a mystery.
