Today in Technology: YouTube XL Brings a More Television-Like Interface to You June 2, 2009

YouTube today announced that they’re releasing an interface for their service that will make viewing their videos on your television more enjoyable.  For me, being someone who connects an old Mac desktop to their TV to serve all media (besides cable), this is certainly a welcome addition. Personally, I think everyone should run their media through a computer of some sort (S-video + receiver and speakers + VNC (w/local static IP) = excellent media center through any old machine). Check out the article on YouTube XL from TechCrunch:

The one thing that sucks about my setup is the fact that the VNC is sort of slow and a pain in the ass most of the time. But YouTube, being Googler’s now, have developed a good idea for this issue: the Gmote – a YouTube XL remote for Android phones. This app will let you control the YouTube interface through your wireless network…pretty sweet and a smart idea. With the release of Hulu Desktop, let the video wars heat up. I can’t wait until I can cancel my cable company

I’m hoping that the new YouTube interface will make it easier to browse and watch videos. In any case though, it’s a step in the right direction toward TV’s that actually contain hard drives and wireless chips. Those days aren’t far off though I don’t think, as this article talks about a Sharp Aquos TV that is getting pretty close. Anyway, here’s some looks at the new interface:
