Today in Technology: Apple’s Answer to Palm’s Pre? The iPhone 3G ‘S’ June 8, 2009

Apple released a new iPhone today at the WWDC conference – The iPhone 3GS. Apparently, the ‘S’ stands for speed, meaning a faster processor and more storage space (16GB standard for $199, 32GB for $299). An excellent addition to the lineup is the new pricing for the old iPhone 3G, which will now be priced at $99. Here’s a comparison of the devices from Apple.

In terms of features and usability there are some exciting new features:

  • The new phone will feature a video camera, something that was sorely missing from previous models.
  • It will also be able to tether to mobile devices and provide 3G internet access to laptops. You have to think At&T was opposed to this, as it jeopardizes their 3G wireless card business, but it seems official.
  • Cut, Copy and Paste will be in play on the new device.  Awesome.  Badly needed.
  • Voice Control will let you control the phone’s functionality by speaking.  Not sure how well this will work, but I can’t wait to try it anyhow.

All in all, I’m pretty pumped about the new editions.  It certainly makes this a much more powerful and useful computing device.  It also maintains the fact that Apple, since the release of the iPhone has changed the mobile computing platform forever, anyone surprised?  Here are some pics and whatnot from TechCrunch:
