Today in Technology: Delicious Gives in and Adds Twitter Sharing to Service August 5, 2009
If you’re a delicious user, you probably think the site an invaluable way to save bookmarks in the cloud, which gives you somewhat of a nice peace of mind in case you want to look up that article you came across a few months back. Another story you may want to consider though is how much you actually go back and read things you’ve stored in Delicious. I know I never do. This thinking led me to the cool analogy that MG Siegler of TechCrunch used today in his post about Delicious: Delicious is where links go to die.
Perhaps that’s also what the folks at Delicious (really at Yahoo) were thinking when they added in the Twitter share feature into the ’store a new bookmark page’ of the service. The feature really just let’s you do a little bit more with the link storing feature, but doesn’t solve the issue of making Delicious a ’social’ service. At least you can include a message that will appear in your tweet with your (icio.us shortened) URL.
The feature is a clear surrender of the efforts of Yahoo to socialize the service and integrate it into it’s own social media strategy. By using Twitter to share links instead of Delicious, Yahoo has clearly stated that Delicious itself isn’t going to be a sharing service, it’s going to stick to it’s bread and butter storage – though it is a statement of openness to integrate a potential competitor’s service into a feature. You wonder if sharing on Facebook and MySpace through Delicious aren’t next.
Interestingly, Delicious creator Joshua Schachter isn’t pleased with the new feature ideas, stating something very similar to the sentiment of Delicious not finishing the effort of building out and promoting their own social features:

Delicious is very late to the party in terms of creating a service that shares links, and going the route of sharing, as opposed to building more interesting features around storage is an odd choice. We’ll see how this takes shape and if it leads to an increase in the Delicious user base.
